Celtics' Ainge: I offered former teammate McHale a job

Boston Celtics president Danny Ainge has already reached out to former Houston Rockets coach Kevin McHale regarding a job, according to the Boston Herald's Steve Bulpett.

In a surprising move, McHale was fired by the Rockets Wednesday after a 4-7 start to the season.

"I've always tried to get Kevin to come work with me and work with my big guys," Ainge said of his former teammate with the Celtics powerhouses of the 1980s. "I told Kevin that. We've got a spot for him. I know we could figure something out for him in some capacity, but I think he’s just in a wait-and-see mode.

"He appreciated me reaching out to him, but I think he's just going to lay low."

McHale is owed $12 million by Houston this season, so he appears to have the luxury of being able to take his time in deciding on his next step. The Hall of Fame power forward's career is inextricably linked with the Celtics, however. Not only did he win three NBA titles in Boston alongside Ainge and Larry Bird, he and Ainge also facilitated the trade of Kevin Garnett there when he was vice president of the Minnesota Timberwolves.
