Chandler Parsons to sit out Mavericks' opener Wednesday

After sitting out all of training camp and preseason while recuperating from right knee surgery, Chandler Parsons will remain on the sidelines when the Dallas Mavericks open the regular season against the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday, Earl K. Sneed of Mavs.com reports.

Despite missing the preseason, Parsons had long been targeting the Mavs' season opener as a return date, and expressed optimism last week after participating in his first full practice since his surgery in May.

Parsons' injury was initially called a bone bruise, but after dealing with lingering pain in the midst of a stunted comeback attempt in the playoffs, he was diagnosed with cartilage damage and sent to the operating table. The surgery reportedly included a bone marrow transplant from his right hip.

Mavs head coach Rick Carlisle was cagey when pressed about when Parsons might be back in uniform.

"You want a timetable? You're not getting one," he said, according to Dwain Price of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "He's been practicing live for the last week or so and progressing well."

Two other Mavericks coming off injuries appear set to play Wednesday, but both point guard Deron Williams and shooting guard Wesley Matthews will start the season on minutes restrictions.

"We'll get everybody back when everybody's back," Carlisle said. "No exact timetable. And I'm not talking about starting lineups, so don't ask."

In his first season with Dallas last year, Parsons averaged 15.7 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 2.4 assists, while finishing second on the team in 3-point percentage (38) and first in attempts (347).
