Pelicans sign Ish Smith

Benny Sieu / USA TODAY Sports

Already battling the injury bug, the New Orleans Pelicans rounded out their opening-day roster Monday by signing point guard Ish Smith. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Smith, who stands at just six feet, spent the preseason with the Washington Wizards, averaging 2.2 points and four assists in five games before being waived Saturday.

With backup point guard Norris Cole on the inactive list due to a high ankle sprain, and starter Jrue Holiday expected to be limited to 15 minutes a night to start the season after suffering a stress fracture last year, the Pelicans need all the backcourt insurance they can get.

Smith, 27, has played in 246 career regular-season games with eight teams. He averaged career highs in points (6.1), rebounds (1.8), and assists (3.3) in 55 games between the Oklahoma City Thunder and Philadelphia 76ers last season.
