Ellington could be under consideration to open the season as the Nets' starter at shooting guard, Andy Vasquez of The Record reports.

Analysis:

Coach Lionel Hollins remained adamant at Thursday's practice that he wouldn't reveal his lineup for the Oct. 28 season opener with the Bears until that day, so it remains purely speculative at this point that Ellington may garner starter duties. However, after the frontrunner for the shooting guard gig, Bojan Bogdanovic, suffered through a miserable preseason (8.8 points on 33.3 percent shooting from the field over 26 minutes per game), there may be some momentum working in Ellington's favor. Ellington wasn't exactly a standout performer in the exhibition schedule either with a 36.8 percent mark from the field over five games, but he did connect on 45 percent of his three-point attempts. That reliability from deep has been a trademark for Ellington throughout his career, and may be enough to earn him temporary starting status while Bogdanovic works through his shooting slump. Bogdanovic likely still remains the more intriguing commodity in season-long formats, but if the minutes favor Ellington in the early going, he could be a cheap, useful option in daily games.
