Wolves' Martin on scoring 37 with broken wrist: 'I was playing the Knicks'

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

There are certain feats that stand as remarkable, regardless of the circumstances around them. Scoring 37 points with a broken wrist stands among them, even if Kevin Martin wants to downplay the accomplishment some.

The Minnesota Timberwolves shooting guard dropped 37 on Nov. 19 last season, finding out afterward he'd broken his wrist. He subsequently missed more than two months of action, and while he'd score 37 points on two more occasions, the 14-of-20 performance with a bum wrist was something reporters remembered at media day this week.

That's cold.

The New York Knicks went 17-65 last season, and the Wolves were the only team with a worse record. The Knicks also finished 28th in defensive efficiency and gave up 35 or more points to opposing players on six occasions. So Martin's justified in downplaying who he went off against, but it's still 37 points with a broken wrist.

Martin finished the season averaging 20 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 2.3 assists, leading Minnesota in scoring and canning 39.3 percent of his 3-point attempts. He enters 2015-16 as the team's starting shooting guard and most dangerous long-range threat.

The Wolves visit the Knicks on Dec. 16 and host them on Feb. 20, games Martin may have circled on the calendar.
