Lakers sign Robert Upshaw

The Los Angeles Lakers have signed center Robert Upshaw to a multi-year contract, the team announced Monday.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but a report in July indicated that a deal had been reached between the two parties that included a partial guarantee for 2015-16 and a non-guaranteed 2016-17 season.

That deal reportedly still hadn't been submitted to the league office for approval, with the Lakers reportedly waiting on the troubled Upshaw to sort personal matters out.

Upshaw, 21, went unselected in June's draft, due largely to red flags related to his dismissal from both Fresno State and Washington. Some concern was also raised about an apparent heart issue, but he was later cleared for a third time.

The Lakers gave Upshaw a close look at Las Vegas Summer League, and while the 7-footer put up disappointing numbers - he averaged 1.4 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 0.8 blocks in 11.4 minutes per game - it was clear why at least one NBA team wasn't ready to write him off. With one of the best height, wingspan, standing reach, and hand-size measurements, plus a ridiculous block rate as a senior, the appeal is obvious.

Upshaw will now have a chance to crack the Lakers' regular-season roster, with the potential to serve as big man Roy Hibbert's backup. The Lakers have 12 players under guaranteed contract for 2015-16, with Upshaw making for six non-guaranteed deals, plus a rumored contract for Metta World Peace, so competition to break camp with the team should prove difficult. Failing that, Upshaw could be tapped for D-League duty as an affiliate player with the L.A. Defenders.
