Report: Free agent Landry Fields to miss 5 months after hip surgery

Unrestricted free agent Landry Fields has effectively ended his free agency, undergoing labrum surgery on his hip, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports.

Fields is expected to miss five months, a timetable which would put his return at sometime in February, possibly making him a candidate for a late-season 10-day contract.

Most recently of the Toronto Raptors, Fields' name was hardly a rumor during the offseason's early stages, save for reported interest from the New York Knicks as free agency opened. Persistent issues with his right wrist and elbow have left the once-rangy Fields without much in the way of an NBA jump shot, but he's spent the last year working left-handed to try to salvage his career.

Once a major part of the Linsanity story in New York circa 2011-12, the affable Fields struggled to replicate his strong rookie performance. Plucked from Gotham on an ill-fated, three-year, $18.8-million deal from the Raptors in 2012, Fields quickly fell out of the rotation and never fought his way back in.

Over five seasons, the Stanford-educated 27-year-old has averaged 6.8 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.6 assists in 23.6 minutes. He hit 39.3 percent of his threes as a rookie for the Knicks, but has managed 34 triples in total in the four years since.
