Anthony Davis on improving 3-pointer: 'I definitely plan on utilizing it this year'

New Orleans Pelicans forward Anthony Davis is taking head coach Alvin Gentry's suggestion to heart.

Gentry has been pushing for Davis to extend his range beyond the 3-point line this summer, and Davis is following suit. A video surfaced in early July which featured Davis calmly draining a smattering of threes.

Davis reiterated his intention to shoot more frequently in an interview with Christopher Cason of SLAM.

If the opportunity is there; I'm definitely going to take them ...

I've shot threes all my life. I didn't really need to shoot them over the past few years as much, but I'm never going to turn down shooting threes, especially if the coach tells me he wants me to shoot them. It's something that I've definitely been working on.

I definitely plan on utilizing it this year.

The 22-year-old Davis ranks as one of the league's best all-around players, but 3-point shooting has not been a strength. In 199 games played across three seasons, Davis has attempted a grand total of 27 treys, hitting only three, including just one last season.

But, oh, what a one it was.

Quite frankly, tacking on a 3-point shot is overkill for Davis. He's already pretty much impossible to stop. Davis averaged 24.4 points per game on a true-shooting percentage of 59.1 percent last season.

However, given the Pelicans' depth at center, Davis will be counted upon to stretch the floor. Being able to shoot from deep will also create options for Davis to spot up or pop out after initial pick-and-rolls action.

In addition to his shooting, Davis is also working on bulking up and refining his post game this summer.
