J.R. Smith agrees with analyst that he needs to do more than just shoot

After receiving a new contract reported to be for two years and $10 million, J.R. Smith is well aware of what he needs to do to make good on the deal in 2015-16.

ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith said on "First Take" on Friday that Smith "has to be more versatile than just a jump shooter," pointing out that at some stops in his career, Smith has largely been relegated to gunner duty. Smith the player took notice, and agreed with Smith the analyst on Twitter:

While there's certainly room to ask him to do more, labeling Smith one-dimensional ignores his stats. He clearly loves to shoot and is unapologetic about it, but he's also averaged 4.2 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 1.1 steals over the last three seasons.

The benefit of Smith's role with the Cleveland Cavaliers is that he won't be asked to carry as big of a scoring load as he did in New York, allowing him to spot up for more efficient outside shots, while theoretically giving him additional energy to help on the glass and on the defensive end.

Smith's generally been an unengaged defender during his career, and he ranked 40th among 91 shooting guards in ESPN's Defensive Real Plus-Minus last season. Still, the Cavs defended better with him on the court than off after he was acquired in January, and he only has to be passable at that end to provide value with his ability to knock down open looks.

Last season, Smith shot 40.5 percent on catch-and-shoot 3-point attempts and averaged 12.1 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 2.8 assists in 70 games.
