Ty Lawson completes 30-day alcohol rehabilitation program

Ty Lawson has completed the first major step on his path to recovery.

The Houston Rockets point guard has completed his court-ordered 30-day alcohol rehabilitation program, his agent told FOX 26 Sports on Monday.

"He is getting out this (Monday) afternoon," Happy Walters said in a text message.

A judge ordered Lawson to complete the rehab program in mid-July following his second arrest within a year for driving under the influence.

Despite the off-court trouble, the Rockets saw fit to acquire Lawson from the Denver Nuggets, a move general manager Daryl Morey deemed worth the risk. Morey has since expressed confidence that Lawson is "getting the help he needs," making clear the franchise is aware Lawson has some work to do on a personal level.

New teammate James Harden visited Lawson at the rehab center and spoke highly of both the acquisition and Lawson's progress, saying the UNC product is "more focused than ever." Lawson will be expected to help ease the playmaking burden on Harden for a Rockets team that has their sights set on championship contention.

But for as much as Lawson's on-court impact as a player is interesting, the important thing is that Lawson the person is taking the necessary steps to sort himself out.
