Report: adidas offers James Harden $200M to cut ties with Nike

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

German apparel company adidas is willing to pay James Harden of the Houston Rockets an exorbitant amount of money to have the three-time NBA All-Star end his affiliation with Nike.

Harden was offered $200 million by adidas after his contract with Nike recently expired, according to ESPN's Darren Rovell.

Nike has until the end of the week to match the offer, which Rovell believes it could be inclined to do after passing on Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry, who now works with Under Armour.

Harden's popularity is undeniable, with his jersey finishing seventh in sales from April to June. He agreed to an $80-million extension with the Rockets three years ago that runs through the 2017-18 season.

As Rovell points out, adidas has struggled in the NBA sphere in recent years due to a lack of star power, falling to No. 3 in best-selling sports apparel brands in the United States behind both Nike and Under Armour.

With Derrick Rose continuously missing time because of injury, Damian Lillard's Portland Trail Blazers lacking mainstream popularity, and John Wall's first line not producing expected sales, adidas is seemingly banking on Harden to be the name that puts the company over the top in basketball, even if it means throwing more money his way.

adidas will continue to be the league's official apparel partner until the end of 2016-17, when Nike takes over. Harden's $200-million offer represents half of what adidas paid when it signed its 11-year contract to be the league's official uniform supplier in 2006.
