Report: Kyrie Irving to attend USA Basketball minicamp, but won't participate

Bob DeChiara-USA TODAY Sports

While he physically won't be able to participate as he continues his rehabilitation from knee surgery, Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Kyrie Irving plans on being in attendance for Team USA's Basketball minicamp next month, according to ESPN's Marc Stein.

Irving was a member of the USA squad which took home a gold medal at the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup, averaging 12.1 points and 3.6 assists en route to being named 2014 USA Basketball Male Athlete of the Year.

There aren't any upcoming tournaments the players need to prepare for, which bodes well for Irving, as all USAB managing director Jerry Colangelo wants to see are the faces of those committed to the program and who genuinely want a shot at cracking the final roster, in the hopes of competing at the 2016 Olympic games.

Irving's recovery from a fractured left kneecap suffered in Game 1 of the NBA Finals is going according to plan, with the 23-year-old recently getting clearance from his physicians to begin working out.

Other high-profile names set to attend the camp include Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder, James Harden of the Houston Rockets, and Kevin Love of the Cleveland Cavaliers, who's continuing his own recovery from a dislocated shoulder he received after getting tangled with Boston Celtics center Kelly Olynyk during the postseason.

Blake Griffin of the Los Angeles Clippers, Kawhi Leonard of the San Antonio Spurs, Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors, as well as a slew of some of the NBA's youngest and brightest stars, will also be in Las Vegas for the camp, which runs from Aug. 11 to 13.
