The New York Knicks need to find value at the margins as they rebuild.

To that end, they've reached out to old pal Landry Fields, according to the New York Post.

Persistent issues with his right wrist and elbow have left the once-rangy Fields without much in the way of an NBA jump shot, but he's spent the last year working left-handed to try to salvage his career.

Fields was a key player in the Linsanity story of 2011-12, with breakout star Jeremy Lin spending his season on Fields' couch in New York. The affable Fields was coming off a surprising rookie year and was a useful secondary ball-handler and wing rebounder around Lin and Carmelo Anthony.

The Knicks surged after a mid-season coaching change, finishing 36-30 before getting steamrolled by the Miami Heat in a five-game playoff series.

Plucked from Gotham on an ill-fated, three-year, $18.8-million deal from the Toronto Raptors in 2012, Fields quickly fell out of the rotation and never fought his way back in. He's shown flashes as an off-ball weapon and he's a versatile and effective defender, but if he doesn't pose a threat from the corners, it's tough for him to prove a net positive.

Over five seasons, Fields has averaged 6.8 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.6 assists in 23.6 minutes. He hit 39.3 percent of his threes as a rookie for the Knicks, but has managed 34 triples in total in the four years since.

The left-hand experiment may ultimately prove fruitless, but the 27-year-old Stanford product could be in the mix for a training camp invite to try to land one more NBA contract.
