Report: Garnett to re-sign with Wolves, Saunders to remain head coach next season

The Minnesota Timberwolves are maintaining the status quo for next season.

Veteran power forward Kevin Garnett is expected to re-sign and president Flip Saunders will continue to coach the team, reports Charlie Walters of the Pioneer Press.

Neither development should come as a surprise. Garnett is at the tail end of his career, but with the Timberwolves prioritizing player development next season, having Garnett around to mentor young prospects like Andrew Wiggins and Karl-Anthony Towns is a logical move. Garnett has seen it all through 20 NBA seasons and should provide a strong veteran voice in Minnesota's locker room.

As for Saunders, the long-time head coach really has no reason to vacate his post. With no expectations to win, Saunders has put himself in a low-pressure position to develop his budding stars.

Garnett was acquired by the Timberwolves in a trade deadline deal with the Brooklyn Nets. Owing to his advanced age, Garnett played in just five games for the Timberwolves, but his cameo appearances delighted the team's delirious fans.
