Phil Jackson defends disastrous 1st season as Knicks boss

With his glory days a distant spec in the rear view mirror, New York Knicks president Phil Jackson took to Twitter on Sunday to deflect criticism of his first season as a front office executive. Whether or not it was his intention, he tweeted himself right into a barrage of judgment.

Jackson posted a series of tweets Sunday afternoon about the efficacy, or lack thereof, of teams relying heavily on 3-point shooting. As he commented on what may be viewed as the overvaluing of the 3-point shot in today's game, he stated that "the three-point shot is not the be all end all of basketball" and that the first principle of offense should be penetration rather than simply playing for the 3-pointer.

That's all fine and dandy. However, it was Jackson's second of three tweets that sparked response from basketball writers.

New York Daily News and ESPN's Frank Isola immediately chimed in with several of his own thoughts.

As the Knicks turned the page on a forgettable first two months of the 2014-15 season, Jackson facilitated a multi-team trade on Jan. 5 which saw J.R. Smith, Iman Shumpert, and New York's first-round pick (via the Oklahoma City Thunder) in this year's draft head to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

And what did the Knicks get in return for shipping out their two best wing players not named Carmelo Anthony? In return, they received a 2019 second-round pick and Lou Amundson from the Cavs and Lance Thomas from the Thunder (both are now free agents).

With the Knicks' season abysmal from beginning to end, they currently own the No. 4 pick in June's NBA Draft. They also have cap flexibility and potential for signing a big name player this summer.

Nevertheless, that didn't stop Isola from expressing himself:

This back-and-forth may be entertaining, but it will be really interesting to see how Jackson and Knicks brass tackle the draft and summer free agency period. The Twitterverse will be watching.
