Report: Billy Donovan targeting Monty Williams, Mo Cheeks as potential Thunder assistants

Fresh off his dismissal as Pelicans bench boss, Monty Williams may not have to spend much time searching for his next gig.

After being let go in New Orleans on May 12, Williams remains a hot commodity on the coaching carousel. Speculation began about his next landing spot mere days after he became available.

Billy Donovan, the newly appointed head coach of the Oklahoma City Thunder, is looking at Williams as an assistant coach candidate, according to Yahoo Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski. He's also considering Mo Cheeks, a former Thunder assistant and most recently the head coach of the Detroit Pistons in 2013-14.

Williams is coming off what many consider a successful regular season with the Pelicans. Anchored by budding superstar Anthony Davis, New Orleans reached the postseason for the first time since the 2010-11 campaign.

The Pelicans were swept by the Golden State Warriors in the first round.

With regard to the Thunder's other assistant vacancies, Wojnarowski states that Chicago Bulls assistant Andy Greer and Portland Trail Blazers assistant Nate Tibbetts are possible options. Brian Keefe, a former Thunder and current Knicks assistant, may look to return to OKC and join Donovan's staff as well.

Donovan has decided to keep Mark Bryant and Darko Rajakovic, holdovers from the Scott Brooks era, however, as ESPN's Marc Stein reported last week, Rex Kalamian will not return next season.

Another possible destination for Williams, who went 173-221 in five seasons in The Big Easy, is Toronto, following reports that Raptors coach Dwane Casey could be looking for new assistants. Rumors have swirled that general manager Masai Ujiri maintains interest in Williams, but no final decisions have been made, according to multiple reports.

Williams, however, may spurn both OKC and Toronto in the end should another head-coaching opportunity present itself, as ESPN's Marc Stein recently reported.
