Celtics' Evan Turner criticizes Game 2 officiating

Bob DeChiara-USA TODAY Sports

Evan Turner has a bone to pick with referee Bennett Salvatore.

The Cleveland Cavaliers held off the Boston Celtics for a 99-91 Game 2 victory, but the shooting guard believes that the few calls from Salvatore may have helped the Cavs along.

Boston was within four points of Cleveland with under five minutes left in Tuesday night's matchup when Salvatore called two fouls on Avery Bradley that had Turner fired up in the postgame press conference.

"I mean, you know, not to knock on (LeBron and Kyrie)," Turner told the media after Game 2. "They are great players, but Avery (Bradley) is a known defender. ... To call a foul (when Irving is shooting) behind the backboard in that type of possession, it should never be called. It wasn't a playable shot. It wasn't a makeable shot.

"That was the craziest call, and then at the end of the game, you call a travel on the ground (when) that was the same (type of defense Bradley was playing) the whole time? That was the only tough part about today. That didn't make any sense."

Irving sunk a pair of free throws to push the Cavaliers ahead by six points, and Boston never caught up.

Turner, who finished the night with nine points, 12 rebounds and three assists, thinks the game may have turned out differently had Salvatore held his whistle.

“You can’t really worry about it. You try to do the right thing," Turner said. "You know the refs are trying hard and can’t see everything. You just try to play hard, but certain things … the one behind the backboard, 35 feet or whatever in the corner was a crazy call. That was a big game-changer down the stretch."
