Mavericks sign Bernard James for remainder of the season

Any Dallas Mavericks fans dreaming on JaVale McGee can safely wake up.

The Mavs locked down their 15th roster spot for the season Tuesday, signing Bernard James for the remainder of the year.

James had been playing with the team on a pair of 10-day contracts to help solidify the team's interior depth while Amar'e Stoudemire got acclimated and Tyson Chandler sat with hip and ankle issues.

While he's no Elle Macpherson - he can't replace Chandler, that is - James is a solid depth big and brings familiarity with the organization and head coach Rick Carlisle's system. The Mavs traded for James in a five-player deal on draft night in 2012, with the second-round pick lasting two years with the club.

He was waived ahead of this season but finds himself back and playing more minutes than he's accustomed to - James has played 87 minutes over five games, averaging 4.4 points and 4.4 rebounds. In 81 career games, the former security forces specialist in the U.S. Air Force has averaged 2.2 points and 2.4 rebounds in 8.5 minutes, shooting 50.7 percent from the floor.
