Spurs assignee Kyle Anderson wins D-League Player of the Month

The basketball world is no closer to knowing if Kyle Anderson's gaudy numbers from UCLA will play in the NBA. They sure will play in the D-League.

Anderson hasn't suited up for the San Antonio Spurs, who made him the No. 30 overall pick in June, since Jan. 13, spending most of his time with the team's exclusive affiliate, the Austin Spurs. Anderson was named the D-League Player of the Month for February on Monday, speaking to just how good he's looked while on assignment.

Anderson helped lead the Spurs to an 8-1 mark, averaging 22.8 points, 8.8 rebounds and 4.7 assists. In 15 games on the season, Anderson is averaging 22.5, 9.7 and 5.1, respectively, adding 1.6 steals and 1.3 blocks while shooting 45.5 percent from the floor. He hasn't been hyper-efficient, but he's been above-average in a high-usage role, an encouraging sign for how he may fit into a smaller role down the line for the parent club.

The book on Anderson entering the league was that he was very skilled for a point forward but lacked a true position, couldn't defend and hadn't established an offensive role off the ball. Strong D-League performances in a role similar to the one he played with UCLA don't necessarily allay concerns, but it's certainly better than the opposite.

In 27 NBA games, Anderson has averaged 2.6 points, 2.5 rebounds and one assist in 12.6 minutes. Since Kawhi Leonard returned from injury, there's been little playing time for Anderson - but a recall to check in on his development and give the team's primary wings some rest isn't out of the question in the coming weeks.
