Raptors' Lowry on struggles: 'I'm trash'

Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

Toronto Raptors point guard Kyle Lowry delivered a frank assessment Thursday of his recent play, which hasn't resembled the torrid pace he was on at the beginning of the season that helped him earn his first All-Star selection.

"I'm trash," Lowry said, according to Josh Lewenberg of TSN. "I'm trying to figure it out right now, to be honest with you."

Lowry helped power the Raptors to a fast start and take control of the Atlantic, a division they have all but clinched with a 13-game lead over the Brooklyn Nets. His strong first two months were instrumental in helping Toronto overcome the loss of DeMar DeRozan - who missed 21 games with a groin tear - but Lowry hasn't been the same player since the calender flipped to the new year.

In 25 games since Jan. 1, Lowry's numbers are way down, averaging 15.2 points, 6.4 assists, 2.9 turnovers while shooting 36.8 percent from the field, and 29.1 percent from beyond the arc. He's only shot 50 percent from the field in three of those contests.

Lowry's been even worse in February, averaging 12.8 points while the team has sputtered to a 4-5 stretch. Toronto will take a three-game losing skid into Friday's contest against the NBA-best Golden State Warriors.

The numbers are a stark contrast to his play through December. Lowry averaged 20.7 points and 7.7 assists while shooting 45.1 percent from the field and 34.8 percent from deep over a 32-game stretch.

DeRozan, who has also endured through struggles, particularly with his shot, was brutally honest about his own play, too.

"Right there in the trash can beside (Lowry)," he said about his game, according to Ryan Wolstat of the Toronto Sun
