Sixers' Carter-Williams out Monday with illness

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

The Philadelphia 76ers will be without Michael Carter-Williams against the New Orleans Pelicans on Monday, as the sophomore point guard has been sidelined by an upper respiratory infection.

"He's not feeling well at all, and he hasn't been feeling well (since Wednesday)," head coach Brett Brown said Monday morning, according to the team's practice report. "It's just been a progressive illness that has finally caught up with him so we'll sit him tonight."

Larry Drew II, who signed a second 10-day contract with the Sixers, will draw his first career start in Carter-Williams' place.

"This is what I was bred for," Drew said Monday. "I'm just going to keep doing what got me to this point in the first place. I feel like, just go out there, run the show, get my teammates open jumpers, pick up on defense, and everything else will take care of itself," the rookie added.

Drew, an undrafted UCLA product, has averaged 4.7 point and 4.3 assists in six games with Philadelphia since signing his first 10-day contract.

Carter-Williams, last season's Rookie of the Year, is averaging 15.3 points, 7.1 assists, six rebounds and 1.5 steals for the 8-36 Sixers.
