Hornets' Jefferson returns Monday

Jeremy Brevard-USA TODAY Sports

Al Jefferson will make a surprising return to the Charlotte Hornets' lineup against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday, the team announced.

Jefferson, who will come off the bench Monday for the first time in seven years, has missed the last nine games with a groin injury. He was originally expected to miss at least four weeks.

The Hornets went 6-3 in Jefferson's absence, playing their way back into the Eastern Conference playoff race. The team enters Monday just one game behind the eighth-seeded Brooklyn Nets.

Jefferson, who was named an All-NBA third-team member last season, is averaging 18 points, 8.2 rebounds, 1.9 assists and one block per game through 32 contests.
