As Knicks head to Chicago, Carmelo refuses to ask 'what if?'

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

What if Carmelo Anthony signed with the Chicago Bulls?

It's the question on everyone's mind - except Carmelo Anthony's. The second-highest paid member of the New York Knicks, signed through 2018-19, refuses to second-guess his decision to re-up with the Knicks as a free agent in the offseason as the Bulls prepare for Thursday's game in Chicago. As Anthony told reporters after Wednesday's practice:

If I start doing that and saying what if to myself and second-guessing and questioning myself, it won't be right. For me, mentally it won't be right, so I will not allow myself to sway toward asking myself what if with this situation or that situation.

Anthony met with the Bulls as a free agent, along with the Dallas Mavericks, Houston Rockets, and Los Angeles Lakers. But he's a Knick, for better or for worse. Mostly for worse.

What's done is done. I kinda don't look at it. I kinda don't think about it anymore. That's in the past for me. Just a situation that I had to deal with, that I went through this offseason. As far as now and thinking that situation, it don't even come close (with) me thinking about that.

The Knicks are 5-22, and going nowhere. The Bulls are 15-9, in firm playoff position in the East, and Derrick Rose has played in 11 games in a row.

But Carmelo has faith. It's about all he's got.

"You just gotta believe! You gotta believe," he said. "I have never been a quitter in my life or in my career."

Carmelo's not thinking about the Bulls. He's thinking about how the Knicks can get better.

I mean, you think about that. It's only right that you think about that. But I don't try to put too much thought into what's going to happen when we still have almost 50 games or something like that left in this season.

So for me to start thinking ahead of what the possibility is this offseason or next season, I just can't find myself to thinking like that during this time.
