Report: Knicks don't believe they have good chance at Marc Gasol

Justin Ford-USA TODAY Sports

It sounds like the New York Knicks might be coming to their senses.

The Memphis Grizzlies are one of the league's best teams and a legitimate contender. The Knicks are among the league's worst. One quick glance at the standings will tell you as much.

So, other than the glitz and glamour of the New York market, there wouldn't be much to persuade Grizzlies center Marc Gasol to join the Knicks as a free agent next summer.

And according to the New York Post's Marc Berman, who originally reported that the Knicks would target Gasol: "A source told The Post the club doesn’t believe its chances are too good of landing the Grizzlies stud center with their 2015 cap space."

You don't say.

There's nothing wrong with a big money, big market team trying to land a free agent superstar against all odds, especially since 2015 will represent the first summer in years that the Knicks actually have cap space. But it's probably a good thing the Knicks are being realistic about it.

The San Antonio Spurs have also been linked to Gasol in reports - as a possible replacement for Tim Duncan - and just about any relevant team with cap space will be rumored to be in the running between now and July.

But it's important to remember that the Grizzlies, who give the MVP candidate a chance to win and the ability to make more money than any other team can offer, should probably still be considered the favorites to retain Gasol's services.
