1956 - Bernard King is born in Brooklyn

King goes on to have a 14-year, Hall-of-Fame career with the Nets, Utah Jazz, Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks and Washington Bullets, becoming a four-time All-Star, a four-time All-NBA team member and winning a scoring title in 1984-85, when he averaged 32.9 points per game.

1997 - Latrell Sprewell suspended

Three days after infamously choking, attacking and threatening Golden State Warriors head coach P.J. Carlesimo during a practice, Latrell Sprewell is suspended for one year without pay by the NBA.

The Warriors also void the remaining three years of Sprewell's contract, although that portion of the punishment is eventually overturned in arbitration and Sprewell's suspension is dropped from 82 games to 68 games.

Still, it is the longest suspension in NBA history at the time, until Ron Artest is eventually punished for his role in the 2004 Malice at the Palace.
