Kings' Gay, Collison questionable Friday against Spurs

Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

The Sacramento Kings have a chance to make a major statement to the Western Conference on Friday when they take on the San Antonio Spurs. But they might just have to do it without a pair of starters.

Rudy Gay is being called questionable to play Friday due to his lingering right Achilles tendinitis, an issue that has already cost him two games. Point guard Darren Collison is questionable as well, and could also miss his third consecutive game due to a bruised left quad.

The Kings have hung in tough without both through two games, beating the New Orleans Pelicans on Tuesday but losing to the Houston Rockets on Wednesday. The Spurs are a tough test even with a full squad, but the Kings will be in especially tough if they're leaning on Ramon Sessions and Omri Casspi for starters minutes.

In 13 games this season, Gay has averaged 21.1 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.8 assists with some of the best efficiency metrics of his career. He and DeMarcus Cousins have proven an impossible two-man pairing, outscoring opponents by 17.1 points per-100 possessions when on the floor together.

Collison's production has been solid, too, quieting those who questioned Sacramento's decision to sign him instead of re-signing Isaiah Thomas. In 12 games, Collison is averaging career bests of 15.9 points and seven assists, and the team's defense has been substantially better with him on the floor than without him.
