P.J. Hairston suffers sprained thumb in return to Hornets

Jeremy Brevard-USA TODAY Sports

The Charlotte Hornets really can't catch a break.

P.J. Hairston was able to return from a sprained ankle for Wednesday's game against the Portland Trail Blazers in a much-needed bout of good fortune for the Hornets. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and Gary Neal are sidelined with injury, and Marvin Williams would leave the game hurt, so Hairston's presence was patently welcome.

The rookie played 21 minutes in his first game back, though he shot just 1-of-5 for three points and was generally a non-factor. He may not have the chance to build any momentum, though, as he left the arena in a brace due to a sprained thumb.

The Hornets also lost on Wednesday, dropping to 4-12 on the season. Things really couldn't be going any worse.
