Cousins, shorthanded Kings get revenge against Pelicans

Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

A fully-manned Sacramento Kings squad hosted the New Orleans Pelicans a week ago and came up short.

Credit the learning experience, the thirst for revenge, or the team stepping up in the face of adversity, but the suddenly shorthanded Kings went into New Orleans on Tuesday and stole that victory back. The Kings took care of the Pelicans 99-89, evening the season series and giving DeMarcus Cousins a 5-4 edge over Anthony Davis in their career series.

Cousins was terrific on Tuesday, scoring 22 points with 12 rebounds, five assists and three steals. He also defended an Anthony Davis dunk about as well as any human could hope to.

Davis actually had one of his worst nights of the season, scoring just 14 points on 4-of-12 shooting with nine rebounds, two assists, two blocks and a steal. Yes, that's a terrible line by Davis's suddenly ridiculous standards.

He didn't have much help outside of Tyreke Evans (22 points) and Ryan Anderson (20), as the Pelicans' lack of depth began to show with Eric Gordon sidelined.

The Kings were equally thin, but didn't use that as an excuse. Missing Darren Collison and Rudy Gay, the Kings got a major effort from their replacements. Ramon Sessions poured in 15 points with six assists, while Omri Casspi went off for 22 points on 9-of-14 shooting. As a result, Casspi got the postgame interview treatment - and the creepy videobomb treatment.

The road victory against a decent team without two starters is yet another statement from the Kings, who find themselves at 9-5 for the first time in a decade.
