Sixers' Brown responds to McDaniels' mom's criticism

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

Some parents never stop trying to defend their children. Once their children are in the NBA, maybe they should.

Last week, the mother of Philadelphia 76ers rookie K.J. McDaniels took to twitter to complain about her son's lack of playing time on the rebuilding squad. To that point, he was averaging 22 minutes a night, decent run for a rookie but not commensurate with his talent level relative to his 76ers teammates.

To voice her displeasure, Shawn Chapman McDaniels tweeted that the 76ers "are tanking the season and fucking over my son." She has since deleted the tweets and her account, but saved screenshots of the interaction.

Her comments echo comments made by McDaniels last week, too, in which he vowed to simply keep working hard in the minutes he receives. He saw a slight uptick in minutes over the past two games, averaging 24.5, but that's likely owing more to his play than his mother's comments.

Those comments didn't go unnoticed by head coach Brett Brown, though. Asked about McDaniels' mother's comments, Brown shared that his own mother had a take on the matter.

"My mom tweeted that he didn't box out on one play," Brown said Monday.

That's a pretty good way to handle the situation, all things considered. It's not quite a mic drop, but there's only so much he can say when mothers are involved.

The No. 32 pick in the June draft, McDaniels is playing out the season on a one-year contract, after which he'll be a restricted free agent. In 13 games, he's averaging 9.1 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.2 blocks, shooting 46.2 percent from the field.
