This Day In Basketball History

Jerry Lai / USA TODAY Sports

1938 - Oscar Robertson is born in Charlotte, Tenn.

The man known simply as The Big O enjoys a 14-year NBA career rivalled by few others, averaging 25.7 points, 9.5 assists, 7.5 rebounds and 1.1 steals with the Cincinnati Royals and Milwaukee Bucks.

Robertson, who wins his lone championship with the Bucks in 1971, is the only player to average a triple-double over an entire season (1961-62). He becomes a 12-time All-Star, an 11-time All-NBA team member (nine-time First Team member) and an NBA MVP.

1960 - Wilt Chamberlain sets single-game rebound record

It's not remembered like his infamous 100-point game, but Wilt Chamberlain sets the NBA's single-game rebounding record with a 55-board performance in a 132-129 loss to the Boston Celtics.

Chamberlain averages 27.2 rebounds per game for the season, another NBA record that still stands.
