Costly LeBron turnover helps Spurs drop Cavaliers

David Richard-USA TODAY Sport

The stage was set for LeBron James to play the role of hero and bury the San Antonio Spurs as time expired in their matchup Wednesday night.

But a late costly turnover allowed the Spurs to hold on and come out on top in the back-and-forth affair.

James had possession of the ball with under 10 seconds remaining and his Cleveland Cavaliers trailing by a basket, but lost control, paving the way to a 92-90 loss.

It capped off a rough night for James, who was held to 15 points on 6-of-17 shooting from the field. He added nine assists and six rebounds but also committed five turnovers.

There was plenty of anticipation leading up to the contest as it was James' first game against the Spurs since San Antonio knocked off his Miami Heat in five games to win the 2014 NBA Finals.

Tim Duncan (19 points, 10 rebounds) and Kawhi Leonard (12 and 10) made sure James didn't exact revenge.

San Antonio won for the fifth time in six games after starting the season 2-3.

Anderson Varejao led the Cavaliers, who have dropped two straight, with season highs of 23 points and 11 rebounds.
