Davis' Pelicans down Cousins' Kings in battle of star bigs

Kelley L Cox / USA TODAY Sports

An early season matchup between Anthony Davis' New Orleans Pelicans and DeMarcus Cousins' Sacramento Kings lived up to the hype, with the Pelicans emerging from California with a 106-100 victory.

Davis finished with 28 points, nine rebounds, two steals and three blocks in the win, which included this nonchalant rejection of Rudy Gay late in the fourth quarter.

Cousins, meanwhile, was just as good in a losing effort, pouring in 24 points, 17 rebounds, three assists and two blocks.

While Boogie and The Brow were the main attractions, it was the Pelicans' secondary stars who helped swing the game in New Orleans' favor. Ryan Anderson, Tyreke Evans and Eric Gordon combined for 57 points on 51 percent shooting to supplement Davis' efforts, with the trio providing 24 of the Pelicans' 30 fourth quarter points.

With the win, the Pelicans improved to 6-4 and leapfrogged the Kings (6-5) in the early Western Conference standings.

Davis appeared to tweak his right knee at some point during the fourth quarter, but he remained in the game and seemed to shake it off. Cousins was also a little banged up after tweaking his left hip flexor during warmups, but judging by his performance, it didn't appear to affect him much.
