Celtics confirm Rajon Rondo will return Wednesday vs. Thunder

Mark L. Baer / USA Today Sports

As expected, Rajon Rondo will return from his one-game absence when the Boston Celtics take on the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday.

Rondo's status hadn't really been in doubt since he missed Saturday's game to have a screw removed from his surgically-repaired left hand. While Rondo had wanted to play Saturday and have the procedure Sunday, doing so on Saturday afforded him three days off before the team's next game.

"It's a little sore," Rondo said of the hand on Tuesday. "But nothing I can't play with."

The timeline under which Rondo returned from a broken hand remains remarkable. Given a six-to-eight week time frame, Rondo made it back for the season opener in just a shade over four weeks. He hasn't looked worse for it, either, averaging nine points, eight rebounds and 11.2 assists in the team's first five games.

With Rondo back, Evan Turner will slide back into his super-sub role, while Phil Pressey could see his minutes shrink. With Marcus Smart sidelined with an ankle sprain, the Celtics remain a little thin at the point even with Rondo back.
