Report: Rubio extension still possible by midnight deadline

Jesse Johnson / USA Today Sports

With the deadline for rookie contract extensions looming at midnight, the lack of updates on Ricky Rubio's negotiations surely has Minnesota Timberwolves fans concerned.

At last update, the Wolves weren't going beyond a four-year, $48-million offer, while Rubio's camp was assumed to be pushing for a maximum extension or something close to it. While the movement on figures is unclear, it remains possible that a deal will get done on Friday, according to a report from Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports.

The Wolves probably aren't thrilled with Kemba Walker landing a four-year, $48-million extension with the Charlotte Hornets this week, or Alec Burks signing a four-year, $42-million deal with the Utah Jazz. Those are the likely comparison points for Rubio's camp, and he's a demonstrably better player than each.

Still just 24, Rubio mixes flashy and creative playmaking with savvy game management and intelligent defense, leaving him just a jump shot away from being possibly elite at the position. His woeful shooting and finishing at the rim can at times mask his appreciable talent, with his one missing skill causing some to ignore all of his other tools.

That's not to say Rubio is deserving of a max deal, especially given the league-wide depth at point guard. But if Walker is a $12-million player, Rubio's camp wouldn't be out of line in seeking something in the range of $54 million over four years. They could also push hard for the five-year maximum and opt to hit restricted free agency this summer if the Wolves don't give in.
