Carmelo Anthony becomes 40th NBA player to notch 20,000 career points

Adam Hunger / USA Today Sports

New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony quietly hit a monumental milestone in his NBA career on Sunday night, crossing the 20,000-point threshold with a 26-foot triple in the first quarter against the Charlotte Hornets.

Anthony, the 40th player in history to reach the plateau, got there in his 12th season and 793rd career game. His 25.2 point-per-game average ranks 11th all-time. He joins Patrick Ewing as the only players to accomplish the feat while wearing a Knicks uniform.

The milestone also, of course, means that Anthony is 40th in career scoring, a list he's set to make a big jump on this season. Should Anthony score at his career clip and play 70 more games the rest of the season, he'd find himself just outside the all-time top-30.

Anthony also ranks eighth among all active players in scoring, ninth if you believe Ray Allen is coming back at some point.
