Report: No extension talk between Cavaliers and Thompson

The Eric Bledsoe situation appears to be repeating itself in Cleveland with power forward Tristan Thompson.

Thompson, like Bledsoe, is represented by Rich Paul of Klutch Sports. This summer, Paul played hardball in his handling of Bledsoe's restricted free agency, eventually holding out until the Phoenix Suns moved from their initial offer of $48 million over four years to $70 million over five.

If history is any indication, Thompson may be headed down a similar path to restricted free agency. According to a report from Chris Haynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Cavaliers haven't yet engaged Thompson's camp in talks for an extension. If an extension isn't worked out by Oct. 31, Thompson would likely become a restricted free agent next summer.

The Cavaliers selected Thompson fourth overall in 2011. In three seasons thereafter, he's averaged 10.8 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. He started every game for the Cavaliers over the last two seasons, but will come off the bench to start this year behind veteran center Anderson Varejao.

It could be the Cavaliers who are hesitating on contract talks. Although Thompson's traditional per-game numbers appear robust, his fit might not be entirely ideal, as he isn't a strong rim protector, something the Cavaliers currently lack. Committing a large chunk of salary to Thompson comes with the opportunity cost of upgrading elsewhere.

However, Thompson is young, incredibly durable, and is represented by Paul, who happens to also represent LeBron James. That figures to be a feather in Thompson's cap. The Cavaliers are already saddled with three max contracts on their books, so keeping their own talent using the Bird Rights is imperative.

Ultimately, Thompson will likely land himself a sizable deal in restricted free agency, but not before playing a drawn-out game of chicken at the negotiation table.
