Kawhi Leonard may miss season opener with eye infection

Soobum Im / USA Today Sports

A nasty eye infection has kept San Antonio Spurs forward Kawhi Leonard out of action thus far in preseason, and unless his condition improves, last season's Finals MVP may miss the Spurs' season opener on Oct. 28, as well.

“It persists,” Popovich told the media on Wednesday. “His eyes are still red; one is half-closed. It looks ugly.”

Obviously, Leonard would struggle to play given the condition of his eye, but missing preseason hasn't kept Leonard from practicing and maintaining his physical condition.

Leonard averaged 12.8 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game last season and looked dominant in last year's Finals, earning him Finals MVP honors.

Without Leonard, look for the Spurs to shift Danny Green to small forward, while starting a wing like Marco Belinelli.
