Report: Celtics likely to waive Will Bynum

24 hours after acquiring him from the Detroit Pistons in a trade, the Boston Celtics appear likely to waive guard Will Bynum, Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe reports

According to Washburn, Bynum is expected to meet with Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge after taking his physical on Saturday.

The Celtics are currently carrying 16 guaranteed contracts for 15 roster spots, and apparently don't see Bynum fitting into a backcourt that already features stalwart Rajon Rondo and hopeful building blocks Marcus Smart, Avery Bradley, James Young, and Phil Pressey.

Waiving Bynum wouldn't come as much of a surprise, as the trade was roundly believed to be little more than a money-saving move to begin with. The Celtics swapped Joel Anthony's $3.8 million contract for Bynum's $2.9 million, so even if nobody claims him and they have to eat the cost, they'll have saved themselves some $900,000, which may prove meaningful as they flirt with the luxury tax line.
