Kevin Durant undergoes surgery to repair foot fracture, to be reevaluated in 6 weeks

Oklahoma City Thunder superstar and reigning NBA Most Valuable Player Kevin Durant underwent successful surgery on Thursday to repair a Jones fracture in his right foot.

The Thunder announced the injury on Sunday, and Durant was said to be considering his options earlier in the week. The team announced Thursday that Durant underwent the surgery in Charlotte, N.C.

The timeline for recovery following the surgery is generally six to eight weeks, and Durant will be reevaluated in six weeks, according to the team's release.

As explained in greater detail in the story below, a Jones fracture occurs at the intersection between the base and the shaft of the fifth metatarsal (on the outside of the foot), and is normally healed by inserting a screw down the center of the bone. With surgical repair, the incidence of recurrence is low - less than five percent - and players can sometimes return to play ahead of the eight-week timeline.

An eight-week recovery from Thursday would see Durant miss upwards of 20 games and return in mid-December.
