Report: Mavericks originally feared Ellis' knee strain was a torn ACL

The Dallas Mavericks encountered a minor bump in the road when an MRI revealed that Monta Ellis suffered a sprained left knee, but it could have been a lot worse.

Thankfully for the Mavericks, their initial fears were unfounded.

The team announced Friday that Ellis would miss the next two preseason games. The Mavs lost to the Oklahoma City Thunder, 118-109, on Friday, and will play the Indiana Pacers on Sunday.

After that, the team has four days off before a preseason game against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Ellis averaged 19 points, 5.7 assists, 3.6 rebounds and 1.7 steals in his first season with the Mavericks last year. He scored 13 points in 23 minutes in Dallas's preseason opener against the Houston Rockets on Tuesday.
