Kidd on Payton's involvement with Antetokounmpo: 'I'm not having anyone mentor anyone'

While the experiment to get Giannis Antetokounmpo some experience playing point guard is apparently very real, it won't involve NBA legend Gary Payton mentoring the young Greek.

In an interview with James Herbert of Eye on Basketball published Friday, Milwaukee Bucks head coach Jason Kidd clarified reports that Payton was being brought in by the club to mentor Antetokounmpo:

No, I'm not having anyone mentor anyone. For me, it's looking at guys that I've played against or played with that can maybe help come in for a day or two to talk about what it takes to be successful. And so Gary at some point might come in and talk, but we're not going to hire him.

So, it appears The Glove won't be in any sort of hands-on role but may occasionally pop in to talk to the team.

This may just be Kidd downplaying the situation, or maybe he doesn't want outsiders thinking he has another legendary point guard helping groom his charges. Payton giving Antetokounmpo a few tips on how to best leverage his assets on the defensive end certainly wouldn't hurt, though.
