Magic Johnson on Danny Ferry: 'He deserves a second chance'

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

NBA legend Magic Johnson met with Danny Ferry on Tuesday to discuss the comments Ferry read from a scouting report about free agent Luol Deng on an Atlanta Hawks conference call in June.

The comments - which had Ferry relay racially offensive remarks about Deng - led Ferry to take a leave of absence from his post as Hawks' general manager. For what it's worth, Johnson believes that Ferry is deserving of an eventual second chance.

Johnson indicated that Ferry had requested the meeting, calling it a "heart to heart" conversation and evaluating Ferry's apology as "very sincere."

Now, it's not as if Johnson is an elected spokesperson for the NBA or any particular group, but his support of Ferry certainly can't hurt. In all likelihood, Ferry's going to need to spend some time away before the league is willing to give him the second chance Johnson feels he deserves.
