Popovich worried defending champion Spurs will feel satisfied

Gregg Popovich isn't the type of coach to be satisfied with one good game, a good season or even five championships, and he wants to make sure his defending champion Spurs aren't satisfied either.

“I'm worried for one reason," Popovich said about his team, via the San Antonio Express-News. "They are human beings. They are going to feel satisfied.”

To combat that, Popovich will break down all of the team's losses from last season, beginning with their Game 2 loss to Miami in The Finals - their only loss of the one-sided series.

As for what Pop will tell his players when he believes they are becoming complacent in the aftermath of glory, he already knows.

Via the San Antonio Express-News:

“OK, now we're the Celtics of the '80s? We're as good as Bird and McHale?”

He paused, laughing before he finished his imaginary dialogue.

“Let me give you a clue. Noooo!”

The reigning coach of the year also described what he thinks happened to the Heat in the finals last season.

“When they won Game 2,” he said, “they probably didn't handle that win real well. They were probably thinking that we got lucky in Game 1, with the air conditioning issue, and they thought they were just going to do it again. As two-time defending champs, it was natural. This had become their place in the world.”

The most Popovich component of the interview, however, is the coach revealing he kept a framed photo from Game 6 of the 2013 Finals - of the Spurs leading by 13 in the third quarter - hanging in the team's practice facility for players and coaches to see everyday last season.

The Spurs, of course, missed an opportunity to win the championship that night when Ray Allen tied the game with a late three-pointer before the Heat prevailed in overtime. Miami won Game 7 and the title days later.
