Greg Monroe's suspension was for a DUI in February; Pistons make statement

Mark D. Smith / USA TODAY Sports

The suspension announced for Detroit Pistons center Greg Monroe on Tuesday was actually for a DUI that occurred back on Feb. 13, not a recent incident, according to the Detroit Free Press.

At 2 a.m., hours after the Pistons had played their final game before the All-Star break, Monroe was pulled over in a 2007 Pontiac G6. He registered a blood-alcohol level of .09, above the legal limit of .08 in the state of Michigan. He plead guilty to impaired driving on April 23, according to court documents.

According to a report from MLive, the police report also indicates that Monroe "urinated on himself during the booking process."

Monroe has owned up to the mistake (see his statement in the post below), and the Pistons organization issued the following statement:

The organization is aware of the matter resulting in the NBA’s announced two-game suspension for Greg Monroe. Greg has taken responsibility in a conscientious manner and resolved the matter with his representatives.

As explained below, the league suspended Monroe two games for the incident, and he'll miss the team's games on Oct. 29 and Oct. 30, both road affairs. He'll play his first game of the season on Nov. 1, the team's home opener.
