J.R. Smith on shoelace hijinks: 'I'd do it again'

Brad Penner / USA TODAY Sports

New York Knicks swingman J.R. Smith is one of the colorful characters that make the NBA a slightly more fun place.

Among his many enjoyable traits, Smith made news all over the basketball world in January, when he was caught untying the shoelaces of his opponents while standing at the free-throw line.

All the fun and games ended up costing Smith a little bit of money and playing time, as he was disciplined by both the league and his head coach.

For all the things he lost in the process, Smith claims he has few regrets about his assault on his opponents' footwear.

"I do care about the fines because it’s loss of money, but other than that, I like to have fun. I would do [the shoelace thing] again if there wasn’t a fine." Smith told Jared Zwerling of Bleacher Report. "But now that I’m in my 10th year in the NBA, I take the game more seriously than I did my first five, six years."

It's good to hear that Smith is maturing, but we can only hope he doesn't take it too far. We need more J.R. Smith's in the world.
