Report: Charlie Villanueva signs non-guaranteed camp deal with Mavericks

The curiously well-covered free agency escapade of Charlie Villanueva has come to a close.

On Monday, the 30-year-old UConn product agreed to a non-guaranteed contract with the Dallas Mavericks, according to Tim MacMahon of ESPN Dallas. A non-guaranteed deal at this point in the summer generally means this is a training-camp deal, though Villanueva would likely stand to earn the $1.3-million veteran minimum should he make the team.

That proposition seems tenuous, though, as the Mavericks already have 15 players on their roster under guaranteed contract. Villaneuva would have to outperform one of the team's other reserve forwards to earn a spot, and even then cutting someone would cost the Mavericks real and salary cap dollars.

The more likely case is Villanueva has signed for an opportunity to audition for other teams during preseason games in hopes that someone could use a 6-foot-11 forward with a 34.3 percent career mark from long range.

In recent years, Villanueva has looked a shell of the player who impressed as a rookie in Toronto and played well enough in Milwaukee to earn a poorly thought out five-year, $37.7-million deal from the Detroit Pistons in 2009. While the former No. 7 overall pick played well for two seasons, he's appeared in just 102 games over the past three years, averaging 6.4 points and 3.2 rebounds while shooting an anemic 37.9 percent from the floor.
