Report: Damian Lillard is 'player on deck' should anyone opt out of Team USA

Although he was one of the final four players cut from Team USA's World Cup roster, Damian Lillard is reportedly "the player on deck" should anyone from the 12-man squad opt out of participating in the tournament.

According to CSN Northwest, Lillard was informed by USA Basketball that he's first in line for any spot that becomes available on the team, with an emphasis on potentially replacing Derrick Rose, who is dealing with knee soreness. The Portland Trail Blazers point guard is apparently content with the arrangement and said he would rejoin the team if his services are eventually required.

"It's something we did discuss with Damian," director of USA Basketball Jerry Colangelo told CSN Northwest. "We'll see what happens."

Along with Lillard, Chandler Parsons, Kyle Korver and Gordon Hayward were cut from Team USA on Saturday. The roster now features only two point guards in Rose and Kyrie Irving.

The World Cup tips off on Aug. 30 and teams must submit a final roster no later than 24 hours before the tournament begins. Once the competition is underway, no team will be allowed to alter its roster under any circumstances.
