The Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat and others will have to wait a while longer to find out if Ray Allen is a potential addition to a championship contender.

Allen has been spending the early parts of the offseason considering whether to retire or continue playing, and that decision may now hinge on the results of an MRI he will have some time soon.

Depending on how those results turn out, the Boston Globe reports that Allen is leaning toward a return, and a reunion with LeBron James in Cleveland, but Allen's agency has denied that he is leaning in any direction.

At age 39 and with two NBA championship rings and $184 million in career earnings, few would blame Allen for walking away. Still, few keep themselves in better shape, and Allen didn't look like someone who needed to consider retirement in 2013-14, when he averaged 26.5 minutes and 9.6 points while hitting 37.5 percent on threes.

And the threes are what matter here for the Cavs, Heat, or whichever team comes calling. Allen can still help distribute the ball and brings loads of experience and so on, but it's his 40 percent career mark from long range that makes him such a strong fit in any offense.

From a fan's perspective, of course you should want Allen back. Not only is he the greatest 3-point shooter of all time, he's been one of the league's best follows for the past 18 seasons (and was the first jersey the author ever owned). Unless the reason is "I'm making a He Got Game sequel," here's hoping Allen comes back for a 19th tour of duty.
