Chris Kaman: Signs With Portland

Kaman (calf) agreed to a two-year, $10 million contract with the Trail Blazers on Thursday, Yahoo! Sports reports.

Analysis:

The signing seems curious for a team that already has a very offensive-minded group of players, but there's no doubt the Blazers need depth for the frontcourt. The second year of Kaman's contract is only partially guaranteed, giving Portland some protection in the event that the signing doesn't pan out. With both LaMarcus Aldridge and Robin Lopez already under contract for 2014-15, Kaman will likely need an injury to one of those two -- Lopez in particular -- to nab a starting job. Otherwise, the veteran center figures to see significant run off the bench, likely working as the team's top reserve big man. The calf injury that bothered Kaman at the end of last season should be resolved well before the 2014-15 campaign, if it isn't already.
