Raptors choose not to waive Tyler Hansbrough, guaranteeing $3.3M salary for 2014-15

The Toronto Raptors allowed the guarantee date on Tyler Hansbrough's contract to pass without waiving him, guaranteeing his salary for the 2014-15 season.

It was unclear to this point what the Raptors would do with Hansbrough. His contract for 2014-15 is $3.33 million but they could have cleared $2.33 million of that off the books by waiving him. Then again, when figuring in the replacement cost of signing someone new for the spot, as well as the small value of his expiring contract for salary-matching in a trade, this was probably the right move.

Hansbrough spent the 2013-14 season moving in and out of Dwane Casey's rotation, thanks in part to an ankle injury that lingered longer than anyone expected. In all, he played 64 games, averaging 4.9 points and 4.5 rebounds in 15.3 minutes. Those scoring and playing time marks are the lowest of his career, but it was also the most efficiently he had scored in his five seasons.

At age 28, Hansbrough is what he is at this point, a decent fourth man in a frontcourt rotation, an agitator for opponents and one of the league's most foul-prone and fouled players - he ranked 24th in the league in fouls per minute and 12th in free throw attempts per minute.
